Necessary equipment: flat collar, leash, food (real, soft food). No readymade dog treats. Dog training, at its most fundamental level, is about being able to control your dog and (this is important) to teach your dog to control herself when she is under stress, tempted by distractions, or is diligently working at their job. A recall, the kind where your dog will whip around and come now, fast and no matter what else is a critical skill. Dogs are faced with many interesting choices and potential dangerous encounters when in your company. Pedestrians, people on bicycles, “loose” critters, other dogs, children, moving vehicles – all sorts of temptations to chase; all of which will result in trouble for you…and trouble for your dog. Learn the foundations, principles and teaching your dog a really reliable recall is your responsibility. You may need to save her life one day by using a recall that she responds to instantly. John Sherman Seminar, August 29-September 1 (Labor Day)Following a successful single day seminar with Dr. Sherman in March it was requested that he return for a longer time to let participants learn how to carry out his suggestions for conditioning our dogs. We are very pleased that we have been able to have a return visit over the long holiday weekend. This is a 3+-day seminar (unlimited audit and large but limited working places), interdigitated with private evaluations (very limited!), focusing on hands-on work sessions to improve canine strength, endurance, flexibility & motor skills. We expect that multiple topics will be covered including more on journaling and video gait analysis. Friday evening’s introductory session will include a light supper; in addition to snacks and fluids each day, lunch will be available on Monday. “Working” spots are open to a single dog per session. Individuals wishing to work a dog but who do not have one of their own to work should please also contact Ginger. If you are interested in one of the limited examinations of your dog by Dr. Sherman (~8 @ $200), please contact Ginger at huxleyv@health.missouri.edu
